Renovation of Guixar Container Terminal (Vigo)

“INCREASING THE OPERATIONAL CAPACITY OF THE TERMINAL”

The new design of the Terminal with a surface of 180,000 m2 (thanks to the reorganization of traffic resulting from the extension of the Muelle del Arenal) will prevent the congestion experienced in the years prior to its opening.

The new terminal has a new Super Post Panamax container crane with unrivalled technical characteristics. The set of actions accomplished during its extension project has led to an increase in operational capacity.

RENFE commissioned Azierta with the writing of the Construction Project for the Extension of the said Guixar Terminal in Vigo in order to define and size up the works required for the extension of the terminal.

Renfe’s facilities for cargo at Guixar consist in a track terminal and loading /delivery yards for the processing of cargo at the Combined Transportation Business Units (containers).

Technical characteristics

The extension project seeks to create a side track of the main track by a diversion and a further 150 m down the track it branches again. Therefore, two tracks would be put into service, measuring 606 m and 475 m respectively along the upper border of the plot of land, by the metallic wall enclosure, thus increasing the functionality of the terminal. Both tracks will be electrified and with signals at the branches.

Three existing tracks under the gantry crane will also be extended 25 m. At the end of each of the lines in the project (5 in total) their corresponding concrete buffer stops.

The affected services were restored, namely the setting back of the 4 lighting towers, the replacement of the 8” firefighting pipeline and the replacement of the gate at the bottom of the terminal, which will be set back to align it with the current enclosure.
